finding reliable medical practitioners
(09-Mar-2023, 11:12 PM)Alt-help Wrote: Hello,
I just joined because I'm a concerned friend of people who are dealing with gender identity issues in their children. I'd like to help them find gender critical therapists in our area. I live in Rhode Island. I wish there was some kind of hotline directory. It's a shame those seeking non- affirming help have to do it so secretly. Thank you in advance for any referrals. I'll be sure to pass along this support group. Smile

Thanks for joining on behalf of your friends. So many people lose friendships over this, when friends believe parents are being "transphobic." It's wonderful that you understand what we face. Friends like you are so important.

GETA (Gender Exploratory Therapy Association) does have a therapist directory. Although their directory still offers fairly slim pickins, it is growing all the time as more and more therapists realize that kids must have lengthy, thorough, careful exploration of their underlying issues before even considering social or medical transition. Go to the following link and click on the heading "find therapists" at the top of the page. Browse through all therapist list pages and perhaps you will find someone in your area. https://www.genderexploratory.com/

Online Zoom/teletherapy may be an option if there are no exploratory therapists in your area. However, it is my understanding (I could be mistaken) that therapists must be licensed in the state where the patient resides, so online therapy may not open as many doors as it might seem. However, also as I understand it, an option to consider might be life coaching, as I believe they are not subject to stringent licensing requirements like therapists are. I believe there are a few life coaches listed on the GETA website. Just something to consider and look into further.

There's also the possibility that one of our members might have a therapist recommendation. I urge you to post your query in the members-only area so that more people will see it. Most members don't vists this area of the forum too often.

Welcome.
